Intro to Wild Edible Mushrooms

$150.00

The Introduction to Wild Edible Mushrooms class is a beginner-friendly course that introduces participants to the fundamentals of wild mushroom foraging. Led by lifelong outdoorsman Chris Watkins, the class covers mushroom ecology, seasonal awareness, safe identification principles, and ethical harvesting practices. The goal is to provide a strong foundation for beginners while fostering respect for the land and confidence in the natural world.

Mendo Family Forage is truly a multi-generational operation. Our daughter Abira, age nine, also participates as a junior guide on select outings. She has spent her entire life immersed in the forests and coastline of Mendocino and can confidently identify a remarkable range of local plant, mushroom, animal, and lichen species. Her curiosity, knowledge, and natural ease in the outdoors bring a unique and inspiring perspective—especially for families and young participants—and reflect the values of lifelong learning and stewardship that guide our work.

All tours can be customized for individuals, families, or private groups and are designed to match guests’ interests, comfort levels, and physical abilities. Our work is rooted in deep local knowledge and a lifelong connection to the
wild landscapes where the forest meets the sea.

Chris Watkins is the passionate founder of Mendo Family Forage. After relocating from the Bay Area a decade ago, Chris transformed his deep love for nature and foraging into a thriving venture that connects people with the healing power of the outdoors through customizable guided experiences—from wild mushroom and edible plant forays to waterfall hikes, tide pooling expeditions, swimming hole adventures, and peaceful forest bathing sessions. With a mission to help guests "shed their everyday worries in beauty found nowhere else," Chris creates welcoming, family-friendly environments where nature becomes a pathway to regeneration and calm. Whether guiding solo adventurers or entire families through the redwood forests and coastal landscapes he calls home, Chris brings infectious enthusiasm and deep knowledge to every foray, embodying his belief that "assisting in the freedom and liberation of humanity through nature" is what it's all about.
