Sunlight & Water: Making Beautiful Blue Prints with Cyanotype

$65.00

Join us in a fun new artistic venture in Downtown Fort Bragg and make a beautiful blue print of your very own in 15-20 minutes! The Cyanotype process was discovered in the 1840s, and is a great way to combine the soothing blue of the Mendocino coast ocean with the rich history of this place, while making art by hand from your favorite Mendocino memories. This simple process only needs paper, simple chemicals, UV light and water to create timeless magic.

This is an introductory, hands-on demonstration of how to make prints by hand from photos in your smart phone, or stencils, drawings or objects provided by the studio. The studio will provide all necessary materials and expertly guide you through the process. By the end of this 2-hour exploration, you will have up to three 8x10 Cyanotype prints (a $75 value!) to grace the walls of your favorite places, or gift a special memory to your favorite people. Made by your own hands!

Anyone of any age and ability can enjoy this unique experience you won't find anywhere else!
No materials or experience needed, Cyan Art Studio will provide everything. Just register and pay for the class and show up. We'll help you with all the rest.

Shane Powers

I began my photography career in Boise, Idaho in the late 1990's, through my desire to reveal the meaning inherent in relationships between people and places. From 2003 to 2005, I built a comprehensive, year-long photojournalism program for 80 students and 10 teachers in 6 Boise-area high schools, funded by the state of Idaho and featured in Photo District News Magazine.

Also during 2003, I assisted editorial/advertising photographer Andy Anderson, where I received my introduction to medium and large format photography. I ended up with a 1930s-era Graflex Super D Graflex 4x5 box camera with rotating back, a vertical "stovepipe" viewer and a collection of century-old brass lenses.

In 2005, I moved to San Francisco, California to pursue my Master of Fine Art degree from Academy of Art University, which I completed in 2008. It was during this time that I continued my Boise-born fascination with "old-world" traditions by beginning an ongoing photographic exploration of San Francisco's 133-year-old Dolphin Swimming & Boating Club. As part of that exploration, I began working with the cyanotype process, which I used to complete the first phase of that exploration, a 16-image work entitled "Swimming With Ghosts".

My photographic work has been displayed nationwide in galleries such as the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado, The Vermont Photographic Workplace, and Rayko Photo Center in San Francisco. My work has been selected by prestigious professionals such as Mary Ellen Mark, Andy Adams of Flak Photo Magazine and Cig Harvey.

I also spent four months in Tamil Nadu, India, as a guest lecturer in India's premier private photography college, Light & Life Academy. From 2008-2014, I taught cyanotype, Photoshop, digital printing and other classes in San Francisco's Harvey Milk Photo Center, one of the oldest and largest community darkrooms in the nation.

Through fate, circumstance and occasionally my own choice, I have ended up on the beautiful and mysterious Mendocino Coast of Northern California. I have a small studio in Fort Bragg where I print cyanotype, offer open studio "Drop-In Print" sessions to tourists and locals, as well as ongoing workshops, full-color printing and art reproduction services.
